bits and pieces

I have been a very very bad blogger lately. And not the best knitter, either. I'm sorry for the absence, and don't have much to show to make up for it.

November was a series of unfortunate events, including some that were knitting related.

First, my trusty size 19 circ broke during Twinkle test knitting! Next, even worse, I finished my pretty and sweet Phildar cardigan, seamed her up and everything, only to find that it was all kinds of wrong! I tried to modify her into a v-neck. Awful idea. Now, she looks like this:

I guess they all can't be winners, right?

I haven't had much time beyond the test knits to get really into anything, but the onset of winter has called for some emergency quickies.

Check it out! Mittens! and ice skates! My first pair of either! The snow is a beautiful novelty for me right now. I spent a lot of fall worrying about how I'd manage to look chic when the weather drops to 20 degrees. Now that it's happened, I've embraced the goofiness of winter gear: poofy jackets, rainboots, pom poms, all of it. There is something so endearing about New Yorkers in their silly winter wear.

And I finished off one of my oldest wips, one I had completely forgotten about until I found it during our move.

It's a 2 year old "branching out" scarf from knitty. My first attempt at fancy stitches.

I knew I wasn't going to go any farther on her, so I just bound off where I had left off, and now she makes a great jogging headband. Much better than those fleece ones I see lots of people wearing in the park.

Not much on the needles, either. Just the ol' afghan and a Christmas hat for my dad. He requested a knitted hat small enough for his tiny head. I'm trying out Jessica's pattern from fig and plum archives.

Sorry again for being a stranger, and happy holidays!

Welcome back. Good for you for getting that project out of your WIP basket. I need to do that with some of mine but have not mustered up whatever it takes (energy? courage? time?) to do so. Anyway, have fun skating and happy holidays to you too.

Oh that's very sad about the cardigan. I've been a big fan of your blog and was inspired to make that one too...in fact I just bought the phildar catalogue...yikes.

Those mittens and ice skates are so cute!! I'm thinking of doing the same now if that's alright. Oh photo op! Sorry to hear about your needle trama! I'm however still envious of your sweet knitting job.

Hi! Nice to find your post today. I love the picture of the mittens and skates. One of my best memories of our year in NYC is of skating in Central Park the day after a big snowfall.
I've been knitting mittens for my son, seeing yours makes me want to make some for myself.

First mittens and first ice skates?! Wow, I have really taken NYS weather for granted all these years. The headband is very pretty! I have never (and probably will never) look that cute while jogging.

Glad to see you back! I think branching out looks great as a headband!

Glad you're back!

You'd probably look sillier if you didn't wear the winter gear and your ears fell off, or something. Love the headband!

oh it's such a drag when knitting doesn't work out. but it's good to see you back and i *love* the headband.

it's also funny to read about getting used to the craziness of winter clothes.

what a bummer about the broken needles! i envy your being able to be all bundled up. i live in tx and today it was a high of 72. it was beautiful weather...for spring!!! this weather is just rediculous here. i wish it would drop so i could make use of some of the hats, scarves and sweaters i've got stored up in my bin in the closet. and there's nothing wrong with those fleece ear warmers!

Hey there, just started knitting obsessively after fooling around with scarves for years, and have stumbled across your blog. You are, without a doubt, the most stylish knitter on the net, as far as I can tell. I'm a dirt-poor grad student in the East Village and am freaking out about all the money I'm spending on yarn. I have the Twinkle book and am dying to break into it, but there's no way I can afford the Twinkle yarn. Any advice?
